Despite the quick ending to the bout, Overeem didn't escape completely unscathed. He was cut over his right eye early on by a Lesnar punch and came late to the post-fight press conference after having it stitched up backstage. He gave no indication during the fight that the cut bothered him in the least, but he admitted afterward that it only made him more motivated to finish quickly.

"I had blood coming into my eye," Overeem explained. "I couldn't see in my right eye. So I had to adjust a little bit, but that also made me put more pressure because I didn't know how severe the cut was. UFC 140 pay-per-view estimates now at 465K-485K buys

Dave Meltzer has updated the estimates for UFC 140's pay-per-view buys in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. After a series of sub-300K buy events, the Jon Jones vs. Lyoto Machida headlined UFC 140 card from Toronto pulled between 465K-485K buys in North America.

The number is much better than the previous several events, but still well down from what the UFC had garnered for domestically held title fights in the last few years.

UFC Cuts Bantamweight Cole Escovedo

The UFC has released Cole Escovedo after the bantamweight loss all three of his UFC fights to fall to just 1-5 in his last six bouts. UFC welterweight Jake Ellenberger confident in eventuality of Championship run

Jake Ellenberger has had an excellent 24 months in the UFC, winning five straight fights and capping that run off with a first round knockout of former Strikeforce Champ Jake Shields. The 26-year-old Ellenberger will now begin 2012 with a major fight against Diego Sanchez in the headliner of the UFC's first event on Fuel TV.

The rising contender is eying a potential shot at the UFC Welterweight Title in 2012, most likely in an Interim capacity against the winner of UFC 143's Nick Diaz vs. Carlos Condit. Ellenberger's well-rounded game make him a difficult opponent for anyone in the 170 lb. division, but there's something else he feels sets him apart from the field.

"I've never been the best at any certain aspect of MMA," Ellenberger commented in an interview with Duane Finley at Heavy.com. "I've never been the best submission guy. I've never been the best wrestler. But my passion to compete and my heart are what set me apart from other fighters. My brother and a lot of other guys I've looked up to have shown me that hard work pays off."

That penchant for hard work has gotten him to this point, and it's that drive and heart that he feels will bring him to the top in the division. Though the potential is there for him to get his shot in 2012, Ellenberger is content to keep plugging away with the confidence that he's eventually going to get there.

"MMA is not a sport where a single attribute makes the difference," Ellenberger continued. "What has gotten me this far is the fire that burns inside of me. I have a passion to compete and I'm always going to have the heart to push further, no matter the circumstance. I'm still young in this sport. Looking down the road, I can see myself being the champion. It may not be 2012, but I've dedicated my life to becoming a world champion. I'm confident I'll accomplish it."

Penick's Analysis: Ellenberger's mindset is something I think a lot of people can identify with. Not everyone has the natural talents and gifts that some of the most elite athletes in sports possess, but that doesn't mean it's impossible to get to the top. For a fighter like Ellenberger, persistent hard work and effort can make up for any gaps in his levels in a certain discipline, and the way he's won his fights in the UFC thus far is a testament to that. He's an excellent fighter, and if he defeats Sanchez, I think it's very likely he'll be fighting the Diaz-Condit winner for the Interim title in mid-2012.

Dan Hardy ready to return to action, wants to fight Matt Hughes in next UFC bout

After suffering four straight losses in the UFC, welterweight Dan Hardy has said he doesn't want to return until he feels ready to validate the UFC's decision to keep him on the roster. Well, he now says he's ready, and told ESPN UK who he'd like to face upon his return:

"I've mentioned Matt Hughes to Lorenzo [Fertitta]. He's been on a rough streak as well recently, he'll look at me and see I've lost four fights and think he can outwrestle me. I also genuinely don't like him. I need a fight to get up for and I'd take great pleasure in smashing him in the face. I won't talk about why I don't like him, it's some knowledge I have about him away from the sport. Even students around where he lives bet against him... Lorenzo would love to see it; more than anything he just likes a good fight! That's why I've not been cut yet because I come to fight. I think Matt Hughes would be an entertaining fight."

Fabricio Werdum, Roy Nelson confirm their UFC 143 matchup in February

Though the UFC still hasn't officially confirmed the reported UFC 143 bout between Fabricio Werdum and Roy Nelson, both fighters took to Twitter on Tuesday to confirm that they are, indeed, facing one another at the event.

Werdum returns to the UFC for the first time since his knockout loss to a then-debuting Junior dos Santos at UFC 90 in 2008. He won three straight in Strikeforce, including an at-the-time shocking upset of Fedor Emelianenko, but lost his last bout in the organization to Alistair Overeem.

Nelson halted a two-fight losing in his last fight, stopping Mirko Cro Cop in the third round at UFC 137. The Ultimate Fighter season 10 winner is now 3-2 overall in his UFC career.

Werdum vs. Nelson official: Brazilian promises fireworks

Fabricio Werdum is getting his second chance in the UFC, he plans on seizing the opportunity.

The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt makes his return to the promotion next year. He's officially booked to face Roy Nelson at UFC 143 on Super Saturday in February.

Werdum said don't expect what you saw in his last fight against Alistair Overeem. He was sluggish that night. He explained to the inimitable Aaron Tru that because the fight got cancelled several times and put on hold, he was simply overtrained when it finally hit the cage.

Werdum was 2-2 in his last stint in the UFC from 2007-2008. His striking has gotten a lot better and he sounds like he gets it now. Simply going in and hunting for the submission won't get it done with the UFC. He promises this time to go for the knock out or get knocked out.

That probably won't happen against Nelson, but what fans will see is a good battle between two of the best submission artists in the big boy division. No one saw Frank Mir and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira pulling off a sub in their fight, maybe we get shocked here too.

Werdum's exit in 2008 came after an upset loss against Junior dos Santos, who was making his UFC debut at the time. The promotion asked to renegotiate his deal. Camp Werdum got a little chirpy and next thing he knew, he was gone. Werdum jokes in the Tru video that he won't be talking too much this time around.

Alistair Overeem is in for UFC 141, but still fighting battle against rumor mill

The last thing Alistair Overeem needed was any sort of performance enhancing drug testing snafu heading into the biggest fight of his career in the U.S. But that's exactly what happened to the behemoth from Holland.

Overeem, his camp and the Nevada State Athletic Commission had some communications issues. When the NSAC asked for a random drug test sample in mid-November, there was a five-day lapse, the incorrect sample was sent in and it was done by Overeem's personal physician administered the original test. It's all been worked out, Overeem satisfied the state's requirement and his fight against Brock Lesnar at UFC 141 is on, but it just adds another odd chapter for folks who are suspicious over the fighter's enormous growth since 2007.

"You can't get bothered too much by all the stuff that's written," Overeem told the Boston Herald. "To be honest, I don't really have time to read it all because training takes a lot of energy. All the activities that come with being a fighter and fighting at this level take a lot of my energy, so I don't have enough time to read it all."

At 6-foot-5, Overeem always had the frame to add more weight, but his gain from a 205-pounder to around 256 has been amazing in just four years.

"Some of it's not nice and people accuse you of stuff and hate a little bit. But if you're going to be in this position, there will always be people who love you and there will always be people who hate you," Overeem said.

"The Reem" is 10-1 since his move to heavyweight. There's a case to be made that he's become a better fighter now that he's not stripping himself down to make 205. In any case, the extra weight allows him to square off against those perceived by casual fans as the biggest and baddest in the sport.

"I think the fight between Brock and me is a dream fight," Overeem said. "I never thought about the possibility of me fighting him in the UFC. I was fighting outside of the UFC and I didn't see the fight coming, maybe ever. The way things went, I'm very happy I got the opportunity."

Of course, the argument could also be made that a 225-pound Overeem might stand a better shot against the gargantuan Lesnar. Speed, movement and technique, not pure power has been the path to beating the former WWE star during his short MMA career.

Brock Lesnar reflects on being in the arena for UFC on Fox debut

Brock Lesnar's first time back at a UFC event since losing his title last October came last month with the UFC's debut on Fox. Serving as an analyst alongside Dana White and Curt Menefee for the Fox broadcast of the Cain Velasquez vs. Junior dos Santos bout for the UFC Heavyweight Championship, Lesnar got another taste of what it feels like in the arena on fight night. During the UFC 141 media conference call on Monday, Lesnar reflected on what it was like that night:

"[It] absolutely [felt great]. It's the old saying, you can take the boy out of the country but you can't take the country out of the boy. For me, being back there, it felt wonderful. I'm a competitor and it definitely felt good, there was a lot of electricity in there."

Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal Salaries and Attendance

Last Saturday night's Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal event at the San Diego Sports Arena drew only 2,995 fans and a gate of $154,075, according to information released by the California state athletic commission.

That total was far short of covering the payroll for the event, which was $580,000 in disclosed purses.

Topping the athlete salaries list were headliner Gilbert Melendez and Gegard Mousasi, each of whom made $150,000 for their bouts. Melendez retained the lightweight title in a unanimous decision win over Jorge Melendez, while Mousasi outworked Ovince St. Preux en route to a decision.

Women's featherweight champion Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos pulled in a total of $66,000 in salary and bonus for her 16-second knockout of Hiroko Yamanaka, while KJ Noons collected $65,000 for defeating Billy Evangelista.

Steroid test results for Masvidal, Melendez, Santos, Yamanka, St. Preux and Mousasi are not expected to be completed for two weeks.
